According to District Commissioner for Mwanza Gift Rapozo, the refugees are getting all the support possible from the Government of Malawi and Non Governmental organizations.
“We are still receiving some refugees who are coming from Mozambique, previously we could receive more than 250 refugees per day but now we receive less than that may be 10, 20 per day,” said Rapozo.
Recently,UNHCR official, Karin de Gruijl said most of the refugees are women and children from Tete province in Mozambique. She said the refugees reported that fighting between the opposition RENAMO and government forces was making life impossible in their home villages.
United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) also hailed Malawi for opening its doors to Mozambican asylum seekers.
The conflict in Mozambique erupted last year after Renamo leader Alfonso Dhlakama threatened to seize power in six provinces of Manica, Sofala, Tete, Zambezia, Nampula and Niassa. Mozambican Government forces are trying to disarm Renamo's militia.
