Government’s Spokesperson, who is also Minister of Information, Communication Technology, Patricia Kaliati said this in response to a story carried on Wednesday’s [June 8 2016] edition of The Nation.

“Apart from being commentators they are also politicians, and they are just talking without knowing who they are,” said Kaliati adding that the commissioners were appointed in reference to their capabilities for effective service delivery at the Commission, regardless of their political affiliations.

The Minister then said remarks by the analyst in the story indicate that the source is ignorant of some provisions in the country’s constitution in as far as appointment of commissioners is concerned. The Minister has since described the claims as divisive.

However many people including Emma Kaliya have commended the President for the gender balanced in the new Malawi Electoral Commission.
