Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC)’s Radio 2 FM has clocked 18 years since it went on air on 17 July, 1997 as the country’s first ever FM radio station.

The celebration to mark the 18th anniversary’a official commemoration starts on July 31 with a number of activities ranging from blood donation, poetry, live music performances punctuated by Disco by Radio 2 DJs.

Renowned poet Robert Chiwamba, musicians Lulu, Patience Namadingo are among the great acts lined up to spice up the day.

Controller of Programmes for Radio 2 FM Mervis Senga said the radio had been playing a big role in quality broadcasting in the country since it was launched.

Considering that MBC Radio 2 FM is associated with people one of the activities to mark the day is blood donation with Malawi Blood Transfusion.

“Friday is a very big day for us Radio 2 FM and the whole MBC family because we have organised a lot of events to mark 18th anniversary,” Senga said.

“The programme starts at 9am with blood donation exercise to demonstrate that we do not operate in a vacuum. We operate in a wide society.”

The party will reach its climax at an up-town entertainment joint Mustang Sally in Blantyre in which revelers are invited to join MBC staff in celebration by paying a modest K1,000 to enter.

Senga said Radio 2 FM had offered a platform to youth a job opportunity through Funline Mix a radio programme hosted by funline presenters, who are nursery to station.

“We have Funline mix which has produced notable presenters, producers and reporters. Some of them are controllers who started with Radio 2 FM just to have fun.

The Central and Northern Regions will have their turn to celebrate the 18th anniversary in due course.
