Cleft lip is the gap or split in the upper lip which renders it very difficult for children to eat or breast feed.

On the second day of surgeries, Minister of Health Dr Jean Kalirani thanked Operation Smile which since 2012 has managed to repair well over 500 children and adults with the condition for free.

Kalirani made the commendation at Kamuzu Central Hospital where she went to appreciate the work.

She said it was gratifying to note that people from all the districts have responded overwhelmingly and are bringing their children to the hospital for surgeries.

Sabrina Ghiddi, Operation Smile's Regional Manager for West and Southern Africa said the team of doctors is working hand in hand with Malawian doctors to build their capacity to be able to conduct the surgeries on their own.

In the first three says of work, the doctors have seen well over 60 patients.
