Chimulirenji who is also Minister responsible for Department of Disaster Management Affairs attended funeral ceremonies of four people who lost their lives in the deadly clashes.
The Vice President expressed deep shock and sadness over what had happened in the district.
He said that Malawi is a peaceful country and therefore mob justice should not be a means of solving problems and people should strive to negotiate and find lasting solutions to their differences.
“We need to change and go back to our reputation of being a peaceful country.” He said.
Chimulirenji urged the communities to refrain from violent acts that bring misery upon others. Nevertheless, Chimulirenji said the DPP led administration will ensure total security of people and their properties in the district.
“Government will renovate all houses that were destroyed during the incident which has left many people homeless,” he said.
Government has since provided the bereaved families with financial support towards funeral arrangements as well as support towards treatment of arson victims.
Chimulirenji gave K500, 000 to the 22 affected households to buy food while waiting for relief items to be delivered.
One of the affected, Anthony Kaunda, thanked government for the assistance rendered.
Another victim, Daniel Phiri, asked government to maximise security in the area to prevent repetition of such incidents in near future.
Government also assisted four bereaved families with K150, 000 for burial arrangements and K400, 000 to transport the three bodies to Karonga.
Of the four dead, one was a Nkhata Bay resident and three were Karonga migrants.
