The National Registration Bureau (NRB) has suspended the registration of Malawian citizens for issuance of National IDs, commonly called 'Nzika' during the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) Voter Registration exercise.

NRB Chief Director Mackford Somanje said in a statement that his organisation was requested by the various stakeholders including the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs to also register eligible Malawian citizens for issuance of national IDs during the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) voter registration exercise.

“ In line with the decision by MEC to no longer register new voters as per the ruling of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal delivered on Friday, 8th May, 2020, the NRB would like to inform the general public that with immediate effect, it is suspending registration of Malawian citizens in all centres where MEC will continue with the verification exercise,” Somanje said.

However, since registration for the issuance of national IDs is a continuous process, NRB is requesting all eligible Malawian citizens to go to either the nearest District Registration Offices or Post Offices to access the service.

The Appeal Court ruled that only those who voted in 2019 will vote again in the july 2 fresh presidential election, throwing out new registrants who will not be allowed to vote.

Malawi will hold the vote after the Appeal Court upheld the ruling of the Constitutional Court which nullified the presidential results of the May 21 poll, won by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The NRB said for more details, contact the bureau on the following telephone number: 01776234; or the bureau’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/nationalregistration/; or on the following website: www.nrb.gov.mw .
