As we were going to the press on Friday morning, a number of others were still trapped under the truck, a situation which has the potential to raise the death toll.
Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi was one of the eye witnesses and he told MBC that the truck was travelling from Lilongwe to Blantyre and rammed into the people after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Said Dausi: “We have managed to retrieve about fifteen dead bodies and there are over 25 people that have sustained various degrees of injuries. The truck lost control after the breaking system failed and it rolled up-side-down. There are over three minibuses that have been smashed. To those that have lost their loved ones, Government will do everything to help them. We know it’s a very serious accident.”
Dausi further hailed the Ntcheu health personel for their timely response to the fatal accident.
