Chanza said no injuries were reported and the city was waiting for the official report from Police and other stakeholders on the “cause of the fire so that we can prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

He said the fire damaged part of the market which had shops and the vegetable sections.

He said Police were working with the city “ to assess the extent of the damage to both the market structure and property.”

Chanza said due to the fire brigade speedy action, the fire was “put out before it had spread to other sections of the market, minimizing the damage and destruction it could have caused.”

Deputy mayor Joseph Makwinja visited the market Wednesday morning to appreciate the damage and “offer some comfort to the market users who have lost their properties in the incident.”
