APM describes Belgium and UK trips as 'significant'

His Excellency the President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has described his trip to Belgium and the United Kingdom as significant as a number of financial agreements aimed at improving the welfare of people in the country have been signed.

President Mutharika was speaking on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe from the United Kingdom and Belgium where he performed a number of official engagements.


The Malawi leader disclosed that discussions are underway with the European Investment Bank where the bank is to give Malawi a loan to be disbursed among Malawians with small and medium businesses in order to improve their lives. He said the loan will mostly benefit women and youth groups.


And while in the United Kingdom, President Mutharika said he had discussions with the chancellor of Oxford University.


He said the university has agreed to partner with universities in Malawi under the new initiative called Oxford-Africa initiative on a number of activities.


The activities include research in economics, Agriculture and science as well as curriculum review.


He then disclosed that discussions on how to carry out the exercise have started. President Mutharika then condoled the relatives of people who have died in four major accidents that have occurred in the country a few days ago. He wished those injured a quick recovery
