Minister of Health Dr. Peter Kumpalume made the remarks in Lilongwe, during the official opening of St John of God Hospital.

“Most of the investmentis coming through the private sector. The investment is a lot in both the government and the private sector. This facility is of international standard and we hope that many people that have mental health conditions will be treated well and help them get back to sanity,” said the Minister.

He said mental health is a serious problem and people who are diagnosed with depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, withdraw syndrome will be able to seek the much needed attention from the newly launched facility.

Charles Mwale who is the Director of Services for St John of God said the multidimensional nature of the facility distinguishes the hospital from other hospitals.

“The nurses, clinical officers, counsellors, pastoral care workers and psychologists will provide an alternative quality service that is in tandem with the dignity that Malawians deserve,” said Mwale.

He urged government to engage a service level agreement with the hospital for the provision of mental health services in the Central Region.

In Malawi mental health disorders are a common occurrence due to abuse of substances such as cannabis, cocaine and alcohol.

The hospital which has been constructed by the Brothers of St John of God will among other things provide assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and care to patients with various mental disorders.
