Confirming the Development to MBC, Mzuzu Deputy Police Publicist Paul Tembo said the incident took place at area 4 in the city on the night of 16th September 2018 and the mob destroyed property amounting to over K2.5 million belonging to one of the elderly suspects, Justine Moyo.

“We had an unfortunate situation whereby the community in area 4 in Mzuzu assaulted some elderly people in the area they suspected of practicing witchcraft. Following a tip off, we rushed to the area and managed to arrest some of the perpetrators, ” Tembo said.

Tembo further indicated that, prior to the incident, the Police invited people from the community for counselling on the matter but this did not yield any positive result.

Meanwhile Executive Director for Malawi Network of Older Persons Organisation (MANEPO), Andrew Kabvala said it is very sad to note that some Malawians are continuing to abuse rights of elderly people by among other things, accusing them of practising witchcraft.

“It is quite very unfortunate that some Malawians begin to think that they can take the law into their own hands and punish innocent people,” Added Kabvala.

Section 4 of the Witchcraft Act of Malawi prohibits naming or accusing someone of practising witchcraft.

Meanwhile the eleven suspects are expected to answer charges of causing malicious damage to property.
