Hail the Queens!

Once again the Malawi National Netball team aka ‘The Queens’ have done the nation proud at the African Netball Championship in South Africa after whitewashing Zimbabwe 71-46 to grab silver.

This is the fourth time for the Queens to realise this feat. In this latest contest they narrowly lost to South Africa 56-51 but managed to win all remaining games with much ease.

The players blended so well with Joyce Mvula and Jane Chimaliro attaining outstanding shooting accuracy.

The Zimbabweans died fighting as in the earlier stages of the match they made the Queens sweat for their victory. The solid defence anchored by Towera Vinkhumbo Nyirenda and Caroline Mtukule Ngwira denied the Zimbabwe Gems  opportunities to net baskets willy nilly.

The defeat handed to Zimbabwe reminds them of last year’s encounter when they received another good thrashing from the Queens 79-43 and in 2017 they were also walloped 55-45.

Speaking to journalists the Queens' coach Peace Chawinga Kaluwa said,” It feels great to have finished our games on a high note. We have improved our winning margin against Zimbabwe.”

Conceding defeat, Zimbabwe’s coach, Ropafadzo Mutsauki, said their opponents had an upper hand of the game due to their fitness and tactics in manning the goal posts.

For a considerable period the Queens have reigned as the champions of African netball but surrendered the status to South Africa’s SPAR Proteas in 2013 and since then have been coming second at times third in the continental showpieces.
