FAM General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said 18 people applied for the position and the shortlisted ones would be expected to be interviewed within this month.
Nyirenda said Fifa marketing expert would conduct the interviews to come up with a successful applicant who will start work by 1 October.
“We asked Fifa to bring a marketing expert because we don’t want to do things in hurry,” Nyirenda said.
He said the position of Commercial Director was important as the association had put in place a heavy commercialisation drive.
“It is very important to have commercial director in Malawi because we have lot of facilities and marketing issues that needed people to know that’s why we came up with advert,” he said.
He said FAM was losing money because of underutilization of marketing such as through television rights.
“We need a drive as we are commercializing our game by taking it to television. A lot of money is being lost because we are not making the best of television rights. We are going full throttle trying to get television station that will assist in marketing our game,” he said.
“We believe that we have done a lot and we believe that this Commercial Director will assist in the commercializing drive to go very far.”
In a related development FAM had sold 2,800 replica jerseys from Umbro 10 months after getting a 5,000 consignment.
Nyirenda said the association would expect to sell the remaining replica jerseys within the year to give room for new designing to hit the market next year.
