Government spokesperson who is also the Minister of information Patricia Kaliati told MBC on Tuesday.

Kaliati said the only event to take place in commemoration of the Day will be a National Service of Worship at the Bingu International Conference Centre in the Capital Lilongwe.

“Government feels that it will not be good for the country to spent huge sums of money on the Independence Day while millions of Malawians need food”, she said.

Meanwhile a lot of Malawians have welcomed the decision saying it makes a lot of economic sense.
