Most farmers say although the prices are not the best, buyers are offering what they described as “considerable prices.”

A visit to the Limbe Auction Floors reveals that farmers that were sponsored under integrated production system popularly known as IPS are being offered good prices.

Most bails of burley tobacco, for example, are fetching as high as 2 US dollars 15 cents. According to the farmers, the good prices are a result of the integrated production system.

The farmers say the market now in its fourth week has seen tremendously improvement in terms of quality and prices of the leaf.

“We are not complaining. The sales are going on well at least for now; though I say things are not perfect.

Buyers are buying according to the quality but we hope things we get better as the sales continue,” Foster Lyton, a farmer said.

In agreement another farmer said: "To say the truth things are ok."

“I believe when I bring some bails the sales will continue getting better than this,“ Zereck Kumanzere another farmer said.

Tobacco Control Commission-TCC Regional Manager for the South Willard Singo said the sales are going on smoothly despite some minor complaints from the farmers.

“Although this year’s tobacco season was affected by devastating floods, the floor has managed sell sufficient volumes of tobacco, “he said.

Tobacco contributes 60 percent of the country’s economy.
