The development comes a few days after His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at a press conference in Lilongwe ordered ADMARC to open its markets by Monday 24 October to enable Malawians to access maize easily.
A spot check by MBC in some ADMARC depots in Blantyre on the said date found ADMARC officials selling maize in all the markets of Ndirande, Chilomoni, Zingwangwa, Bangwe, Chirimba and Lunzu among others.
The visit also revealed that there were no queues in all the markets with people coming at a very low pace signifying that despite opening of ADMARC markets people do have enough maize in their homes.
Random interviews from people in the surrounding areas thanked government for opening the markets as they will be able to purchase the commodity at a reasonable price.
“I am grateful for this initiative as we’ll no longer struggle to buy maize,” said one Ndirande resident.
According to ADMARC officials people are allowed to buy a maximum of 30 kilograms of maize in the meantime. ADMARC has 93,000 metric tones of maize in stock.
