Parliament confirms Nyirenda as Chief Justice

Parliament has confirmed Justice Andrew Nyirenda to be the Chief Justice for the republic of Malawi.

Members unanimously voted for the motion with 141 votes for the appointment while four members voted no.    

 

Commenting on the motion, Peoples Party spokesperson on justice matters in the house Patricia Kainga said Justice Nyirenda is a matured person who can be trusted for the post.  

MCP spokesperson Peter Chakwantha said while members had trust that the judge will indeed deliver there are challenges that need to be addressed in the judicial sector. 

 

Meanwhile Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu commended members for accepting the new chief justice.   

 

Tembenu said government is doing everything possible to address challenges that are in the judicial system.
