At the beginning of May, her officials announced that the former president was to return home by the end of May and that her husband Richard Banda had already arrived in Malawi to prepare for the return of the former Malawi leader.

However investigations by MBC have established that Dr Joyce Banda had not landed in Malawi as promised by the end of business on Sunday the 31 May 2015.

According to Peoples Party spokesperson Ken Msonda Banda had not yet arrived as earlier announced because of reasons beyond her control but he insisted that she would come on a date to be announced later.

“As a former head of state there are a number of dynamics that are involved when she is travelling one of them being security but we can assure you that she is coming soon,” said Msonda.

However the spokesperson did not specify the actual day of her return but dispelled rumours that the former president might be afraid of anything at all.

“I have been in constant touch with her almost daily but it’s not that she is afraid of anything. Malawi is her home,” Msonda added.

The former President has spent closer to 10 months in what has been described by analysts as self imposed exile for some undisclosed reasons after losing the May 20 Presidential Elections last year.

She has been reported to have been in the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa among many other countries.

Meanwhile Francis Bisika a Political Philosopher at the Blantyre International University (BIU) says the absence of the president is a worrisome development to politics in Malawi.

“I am surprised why the former head of state has decided to stay away from her home country for such a long time but I can say here that the development is posing danger to her political carrier and her party as a whole,” Bisika said.

Bisika also expressed concern over the impact her absence could result on her political career.

“Her party is facing a number of challenges including massive exodus of senior members, a clear sign that all is not well within the PP and if I were her I would come back to sort out the mess,” he said.

The former president left the country after losing the May 2014 Presidential race to the incumbent, Professor Peter Mutharika.

Banda, who ruled Malawi for two years, only managed a distant third position in the presidential race.

She was ushered into the presidency following the constitutional provision of succession after the death of late President Ngwazi Professor Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012.
