DPP Vice President for the Southern Region Dr George Chaponda made the call during a meeting held in Limbuli Constituency in Mulanje.

Dr Chaponda, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the move would help strengthen the party’s structures at grassroots level.

He also urged the party’s affiliates to welcome and accommodate members from other political organisations interested to join the DDP.

“It is very important for them to remain united,” Chaponda said.

“The doors should be opened because it is only our party that has a programme for development.

“They should go in the villages to strengthen structures plus do everything possible for our party to grow and continue expanding.”

Chaponda added that the DPP was the only party in Malawi capable of developing the country.

He also commended the people who remained committed during the two years the party was in opposition following the sudden death of President Bingu Wa Mutharika while in office.

The DDP Vice President then assured the country that government would provide sufficient food to people affected by devastating floods and drought which hit some parts of the country.

“Following the budget that has just passed there are a number of programmes that will benefit them, for instance, the looming hunger that has been caused by the effects of floods and drought,” he said.
