Salima Police spokesperson, Gift Chitowe said the victims met their fate on their way to monitor the national registration exercise currently underway in some districts in the Central Region.
“Police Officer Nellie Mkanjana(nee Kagulo) of Mchotseni Village T/A Kanduku in Mwanza District has died after a motor vehicle she was travelling in fell into a bridge. On May 30, police officers were being deployed to registration centres of the ongoing process of National Identification cards using a Toyota Land cruiser registration number MP 2012 driven by Constable Jimmy Manusha with 3 passengers on board,” explained Chitowe.
Chitowe further told MBC that the deceased was in a front passenger seat and other two, Sub Inspector Mzume as well as Sergeant James Mwenye who were in the body.
“Driving along Makioni-Chikwawa earth road and upon arrival at Vesi village the driver failed to negotiate a corner hence ending up hitting a right pillar of a single lane bridge which eventually resulted the car falling into a bridge,” he added.
He further said the deceased died of head injuries while the other 3 occupants sustained soft tissue injuries and are being treated at Salima District Hospital.
