CONGOMA is a membership umbrella organization for Non Governmental Organizations and is a designated NGO coordinating body in Malawi as stipulated in section 24 and 25 of the 2000 Non-governmental organizations act.
According to CONGOMA Chairperson Mac Ben Mkandawire, the suspension of the sale will help that all concerned sides take part in the sale.
`The suspension itself is a sign that the country has a president who listen the views and for now we can hope that all the things that an alternative voice to the sale demanded would be met by the relevant authorities.` said Mkandawire.
He also said proper engagement must be made so that other things should not be seen to be covered up.
`Its very imperative that things of Nation interest must be dealt with the most transparency and that those who are owing the bank are able to pay back what they took.` added Mkandawire.
Mkandawire further said the CSOs are not frustrating the sale of MSB but that all things but be done in a transparent way.
However, Malawi Congress Party spokesperson has Jessie Kabwira has expressed her party`s gratitude over the sale.
`It was not a good battle; people in the Village were worried that their bank that Is found almost everywhere is going away. ` said Kabwira.
She however said as a party they are hopeful that the sale has not been suspended for parliament to pass the budget but that it’s in true faith.
`Its our hope that this is not another game whereby we shall see the bank on the market soon after the passing of budget which we held due to issues surrounding the bank. ` said Kabwira.
But government`s spokesperson Kondwani Nankhumwa said the head of state is serous on the decision and that as government they are hopeful that proper debate and discussion will ensue.
`There is no way we can play hide and sick on this decision, remember that the head of state indicated that until enough discussion on the matter has been held then the bank will go back on the market.` said Nankhumwa.
