Malawi is expected to have more companies establishing telecommunication companies once the telecommunication act is amended by Parliament in the next sitting.

This comes amid concerns that the country is failing to attract walk-in investors who can invest into the Telecommunications sectors which is currently dominated by TNM and Airtel.

According to Malawi communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General Andrew Kumbatira once the 1998 communications act has been amended there will be more walk-in investors who currently fail to do so due to the restrictions of the act.

`The current setup only gives power to MACRA to advertise to the telecommunications license but once the act is amended in the current sitting we will be able to accept and accommodate walk in investors,` said Kumbatira.

Kumbatira said Malawians are set to benefit from the competition that will be brought by the new players interested to invest in the country.

He further said the act was passed at a time when Malawians could not transact money and even access internet on their phones.

`It`s our plan that the communications act should be technology neutral so that when technology is changing it should remain the same,` added Kumbatira.
