A Police Officer who was suspected to have raped a 14 year old girl in a police cell in Dowa last month has been arrested.

According to the National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera, the arrested officer is expected to appear in court in Lilongwe where he will answer defilement charges.

The arrest follows findings of an inquiry that was instituted by the Inspector General of Police after the news broke last month. The rape victim was under arrest after being involved in a fight at school.

“The team has come up with its recommendations and one of them has emphasized on the need for the suspected officer to be charged and prosecuted of the offence of defilement,” said Kadadzera.

In a press release issued by the Police, it has also been recommended that every police officer involved in the involvement of the detention of the girl be dealt with in accordance with the Disciplinary Code of Conduct for Police Officers.

Not wanting to lose or tamper with the evidence, the commission of inquiry recommended that all stakeholders including the police and medical personnel must in all sexual offences, collect and preserve materials and samples that can be used for forensic DNA analysis.

Kadadzera said the Police service is working diligently with the public and has urged all members of the general public to report such kind of cases to relevant authorities and promised that the case will be followed to the very end.

“If there are cases of defilement involving police officers, I would strongly urge that these cases be reported because our aim is to uphold the law and protect human rights of everybody including the minors. In Malawi, no one is above the law and we will not have Police abuse their positions in society,” explained Kadadzera.

It was alleged that a suspect raped the 14 year old girl on the night of 4 October 2018 at Chisepo Police Unit in Dowa district and .escaped from police custody only to later realise that it was a policeman who was suspected to have defiled the young girl.
