Cassper Nyovest gives Malawi S/O in new single

Written by  David Kapezi

South Africa’s rapper of the moment Cassper Nyovest may be nursing a positive hangover from his recent trip to the genesis of his roots, the Warm Heart of Africa.

The 24-year-old versifier paid homage to Malawi in one of the two new songs he released from the platinum edition of his critically acclaimed album Tsholofelo.

The remix to his hit single Doc Shebeleza sees him team up with Nigerian rap icon M.I Abaga and the versatile Burna Boy, while making up one mind with the multitalented Wizkid on the club-banger Single for the Night.

It is on the latter that Nyovest suggests he is now conversant in Chichewa (Malawi’s national language), albeit using arguably the first two words a Malawian uses during any meet-and-greet.

“Baby girl that’s where I be, I say Malawi / muli bwanji…” raps the award-winning artist with lyrical ease in the opening line of Single for the Night’s second verse.

Granted it is highly unlikely that the Rainbow Nation emcee can string together another phrase, let alone a succession of sentences, in the local language.

However uttering the simple two-word phrase is a significant shout-out to the country plus the clearest indication yet that the rapper’s first trip to Malawi is still fresh on his mind.

Nyovest (real name Refiloe Maele Phoolo) was born in Mafikeng, South Africa but also has Malawian and Swati roots as his granddad hails from the Warm Heart of Africa.

“My mom’s dad is from Lilongwe,” he revealed on social network Twitter in January this year.

The rhymester visited Malawi for the first time in March this year and held shows in the country’s Commercial City Blantyre plus the Capital City Lilongwe during his week-long stay.
