UMP announces women empowerment initiative

Written by

In an effort to promote and increase women participation in Malawi music, art and culture, the Urban Music People (UMP) has embarked on a project dubbed ‘50:50 Initiative for Women Empowerment in Music and Arts’.

In a press statement made available to MBC Online, UMP Projects Director Wisdom Phanga, said as a starting point, they have selected Krazy Colors – an all-female band, to be an ambassador for the Initiative.

The group is, meanwhile, set to perform at Rock City on Saturday 16 February – where they said supreme talents will be on display.

Phanga further explained that UMP will identify and recruit nine talented young females to undergo a two-year sponsored training and mentorship programme in three key sub-sectors of the industry: music production, music video production, and graphic designing. There will be three recruits per sub-sector.

“We would like to pioneer a female empowerment campaign in the arts sector, we hope that other players in the industry will also adopt deliberate steps to ensure that female talent is nurtured and promoted. We are also acting on feedback that we have received over the years - that urged us to increase the involvement of female talent. We are in our 10th anniversary year and we are happy that as our brand has matured, we have a responsibility to contribute more positive developments to the local arts industry,” he said.

Meanwhile, UMP has released the 2019 awards calendar, which is starting with Fashion Awards on 31 August in Lilongwe followed by music and media awards on November 9 and 10, respectively. Both awards will take place in Blantyre.

Last on the menu are sports awards on December 29, in Lilongwe.

And achieve the 50:50 gender balance, the organisation has  splitting categories in UMP Music Awards by gender in key categories, such as artist of the year; best Hip-Hop act; best DanceHall act and best R&B Act which will have female and male categories.
