‘A GIRL AND A BIKE’ CAMPAIGN

Creative Solutions for the Environment under the project “A Girl and a Bike” has provided 30 bicycles to girls at Matope Day Secondary school in Neno. The provision is aimed at easing the girls’ mobility when going to school. Speaking after presenting the donation, Creative Solutions Executive Director Taona Makunje Chigwenembe says due to inadequate secondary schools in Balaka and Neno districts, some girls are selected to schools that are 60 or more kilometers away, hence the donation.

Government says it has procured over 300-thousand doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine which is expected to arrive in the country this Friday. The vaccine will arrive alongside 119-thousand doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in the next two weeks, to avoid running out of COVID 19 vaccine in the country. Speaking in Mzuzu during media briefing on the current COVID 19 situation in Malawi, Spokesperson in the Ministry of Health, Adrian Chikumbe said Johnson and Johnson has an efficacy rate of about 80-percent and Malawians need to continue to observe all COVID 19 preventive measures to avoid further local transmission of the virus.

Continued flow of tobacco for sale at the Limbe Auction Floors in Blantyre has forced Tobacco Commission-TC to postpone closure of the market. Initially, tobacco sales at the Limbe Auction Floors were expected to close today. In an interview with MBC, TC Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the decision has been rescinded after it was established that there is still more volume of Tobacco that has not been traded at the Limbe Auction Floors.

Only 2 percent of the Malawi population has health insurance cover, a situation the Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) says needs to be addressed. MHEN Executive Director George Jobe, says medical scheme firms have a role to raise public awareness on the benefits of health insurance cover, as Malawi strives to achieve the Universal Health Coverage.
