Mutharika attends MDF funeral service….as death toll reaches 21

President Peter Mutharika on Friday attended a funeral service for the 19 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers who died on a fatal road accident in Mzimba on Thursday.


At the funeral service, which took place at Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe, President Mutharika and his vice Dr. Saulos Chilima made a combined contribution of K500, 000 to each of the bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the accident’s death toll has now risen to 21, but the MDF says those still admitted at Mzimba District Hospital are stable with others slowly recovering.

The soldiers mostly recruits and their trainers were about sixty plus in an Iveco truck registration number 922 MDF returning from a training exercise in Mzimba.

Thirteen died on the spot, five upon arrival at Mzimba District Hospital while one died at around 1900hrs as he was receiving treatment. Twelve have been referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital while thirty with minor injuries are being treated at Mzimba District Hospital.

The accident occurred at around 1100hrs on Thursday 2, 2017 at Mapanjira on the Mzuzu-Kasungu M1 road in the district. The driver (deceased) failed to negotiate a corner resulting to overturning of the vehicle.

They were headed for the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima.
