SOS: Watch out for floods, Malawians in South warned

Water experts have warned Malawians living in the Southern region to watch out for floods following heavy rains from January 20 to 23.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development through its Department of Water Resources sounded the warning, saying heavy rainfall has been forecasted and the following rivers are expected  to experience high water rainfall levels (floods) due to high catchment runoff:

 

.Ruo River downstream of Sandama with high alert for the following areas: Sandama, Ndongo, Thukuta, Sankhulani, Chikhulu, Juwaki and Makhanga.


.Mwanza River with high alert for areas downstream of Tomali, Sande and Belewu.


.Shire River in the Lower Shire valley with high alerts at Tengani and Chiromo areas.

 

“The general public is therefore advised to exercise caution to avoid loss of human life and damage to property that may be caused by these impending floods in the next 2 to 3 days,” a statement signed by Gray Nyandule-Phiri, secretary for Agriculture Ministry, said.

 

The statement added that people avoid staying close to river banks of Ruo, Mwanza and Shire rivers in the Lower Shire and its tributaries.
