Govt shuts down four liquor sachets companies

Written by

Malawi government has sealed for companies in the capital Lilongwe for allegedly continuing producing, marketing and distributing liquor sachets and plastic bottles.

The development follows a High Court ruling on January 4 2016 which sustained the State’s ban on liquor packaged in sachets and small plastic bottles.

According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry Spokesperson Whiskeys Mkombezi that the Ministry inspected eight companies of which four defied Court ruling hence the closure.

“The four were defying high court ruling and they continued producing and packaging liquor in plastic bottles and as the ruling determines-we couldn’t do otherwise but closing them down. We know there is a number of them as we are talking and we promise to be on their door steps in the next few days coming,” said Mkombezi.

The four closed companies are Quality Industries, SR Distilleries, Vulushadri Spirits and Red Breweries.

Earlier last year, Alcoholic and Beverages Association had applied to the High Court asking for a review on the decision to ban the sale of alcohol in sachets packages.

And the high court on January 4 ruled that the government was not wrong to enforce the ban, which is aimed at controlling consumption of alcohol in the country.

Meanwhile Drug Fight Malawi has hailed the move saying government seems to care about youths.
