“Government has observed that some traders are re-exporting some medical products to the same countries that Malawi imported from,” the ministries said.

They  said the suspension was "effected in order to ensure that there is an adequate supply of medical products that would be in demand locally in case of any outbreaks such as the Coronavirus which has affected many countries around the world.”

They said the measure “will also help to save the much needed foreign exchange,” adding that the global demand on some medical supplies such as face masks has increased tremendously in view of recent outbreaks.

The ministries said the suspension would be lifted once the global supply of these medical supplies has improved.

The statement was signed by Ken Ndala, secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism and Dan Namarika, secretary for Health and Population.

Coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan province in China , is a virus that has come from animals and causes pneumonia, with those reported ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties.

Many Chinese wear face masks to protect themselves from Coronavirus.

As of February, at least 800 deaths were reported inside China, with infections standing at 37,200.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

The WHO classifies a pandemic as the worldwide spread of a disease, such as AIDS.
